We are proud to offer a new feature to our website: UNLV ASDA Classified Ads.
This is an exciting time of year for many dental students:
-DS4s are in their final weeks, finishing out the year and making arrangements for their newly minted careers.
-DS3s are looking ahead to prepare for NBDE II, licensure exams, and other clinic requirements.
-DS2s have started searching for NBDE I materials and other study aids.
-Soon-to-be DS1s are receiving that important package to which they will start planning the next 4 years in Las Vegas.
This service will hopefully make it easier for all those transitions in life, provide a marketplace for all sorts of items, and help connect students at UNLV SDM. Please feel free to place an ad or browse the categories.
Join us for a Lunch and Learn adressing important questions that you will be asking yourself as you approach graduation and entering the workforce. The information will be presented by Eagleston Financial Group on Wednesday, March 5th in the A Building Auditorium and is directed especially to our 3rd and 4th years. Lunch will be provided so we ask that you please RSVP with your first and last name.
Here is some information about the presenters:
Eagleston Financial Group, established in 1965, specializes in helping dentists nationwide with their overall financial needs. Specifically, we have helped new dentists with their insurance needs for several years.
We work with several dental groups and organizations and present at various dental schools and residency programs across the country. The process of selecting and implementing the proper types of insurances can be difficult and stressful, and we help by providing them with the knowledge and resources necessary to make informed decisions and establish peace of mind. We also stress the importance of financial organization and provide ways for clients to establish good systems to stay on top of their financial situation, which will go a long way in helping them avoid many of the mistakes we see dentists making due to their inability to understand and keep track of the different loans, insurance policies, investments and accounts they have. Our ability to work in all 50 states and with over 60 different companies allows us to be objective and work with students and residents in a pressure-free atmosphere.
Here is a list of some of the items we typically cover in our presentation:
- Identify some of the financial related decisions that have to be made as one enters practice
- How a disability insurance policy works and the differences between a group and individual policy
- Life Insurance 101
- What to consider when purchasing a disability/life/health/malpractice policy
- The role an individual’s health plays into their options
- How to determine which option/company is best
- How and when to implement a policy and/or retirement plan
- The importance of and reasons for developing a team of professionals who all understand the individual, dentistry and can work together to help achieve the practice, financial and family goals one has

One of the perks of going to Dental School in Las Vegas is the beautiful weather; although between studying, treatment planning, and lab work it may be difficult for us to actually enjoy it! Determined to take advantage of the 104 degree and sunshinning weather, ASDA hosted a Summer BBQ for all UNLV SDM dental students, staff, faculty, and thier families. Pictured to the left is Social Co-Chair Doug Chespak in charge of manning the grills.
Students and thier families gathered on the grass to enjoy the food and the perfect weather. The food wasn’t the only draw to BBQ though! Water balloons, water guns, facepainting, and fun competitions with prizes were also on the menu. Faces painted with Batman symbols and Butterflies were the themes seen for kids. DSI Nicholas Delisle ran with this theme while his classmate Richard Copithorne opted to give himself the moustache he always dreamed of.
People came and went. Relaxed in the shade. Chatted with faculty. Introduced family and kids to their classmates. But the fun continued with a three-legged race and an impressive competion of waterballoon toss which challenged everyone’s hand/eye coordination in a much different way. Both competitions were swept by DSIs (they are really competative!). Prizes included bragging rights as well as gift cards to Starbucks, Regal Cinema, Coldstone, and SmashBurger.
Overall it was a great way to spend an afternoon. We hope that everyone had as much fun as we did! Hope to see you all again at the next ASDA event! Check out our Flickr page here to see the rest of the photos.
Normally by 1:00pm on a Friday afternoon the clinic hallway is thinning out, but last week was just the opposite as the Lincoln Parker Ping Pong Hero tournament was getting underway.
The tournament, which is in its 4th year at UNLV, was presented as a collaboration of ASDA and Healthy Smiles. This year the tournament saw its first appearance in the A building. Pedo Residents, Maroons, Grays, and Reds all battled it out to see who would become this years winner.
After warm ups and several intense matches the trophy was finally awarded to DS1 Travis Neu. ASDA would like to congratulate Travis and thank Healthy Smiles for organizing such a fun event.
We have great community service opportunity as we will be heading over to Ronald McDonald house to serve a dinner for families with children in the hospital on May 13th. If you are interested, please ask any of the ASDA officers to get more information.
We hope that everyone has enjoyed their safe and fun spring break!
ASDA will have couple updates as new semester started. Please check our website regularly for our upcoming events and news!
